Linn Uphorik Review

Below is a Uphorik review by by Oliver Amnuaphol   27th April 2010

You know what I love about Linn Products Ltd.? They're analog diehards to the core, firmly committed to the vinyl cause. In fact, Linn's Sondek LP12, the 'table that revolutionized vinyl replay nearly 40 years ago, is still in production, having been continuously refined and upgraded over the years. No wonder then that the LP12 remains one of the best 'tables around.

Of course, if one has a deck such as the LP12 and wants to hear all the goodies locked in an LP's groovy grooves, one needs equally boss ancillary components to complete one's vinyl front end, no? Enter Linn's new phono preamp, the Uphorik.

Utilizing Linn's latest Über-quiet Switch-Mode power supply, the Uphorik features dedicated left and right/dual-mono, discretely-shielded circuit path technology originally developed for Linn's Sondek-exclusive, internally-housed flagship phono stage, the Urika. What's more, the Uphorik also features balanced or single-ended outputs, dedicated inputs and signal paths for either moving-magnet or moving-coil pickups, and user-selectable load and gain settings; your Linn dealer can also hard-solder these switches in order to bypass the contacts for optimal performance. Linn claims this is their best stand-alone phono stage ever, and considering the performance level of their still-in-production Linto phono stage, that's sayin' something. And if the suggested retail price of $2850 is correct, the Uphorik looks to be something of a bargain as well considering the potential performance on tap. So if you're looking for a first class phono preamp, be sure to put the Uphorik on your shortlist.
